In addition to testing for contaminants and potency, there is also interest in the determination of terpene identity. At Provident Labs we use fully validated GC (gas chromatography) that can provide accurate analysis of 21 terpenes.

Terpenes are aromatic molecules found in plant resins. They add the smells and flavours found in cannabis flowers and extracts, terpenes also provide the notable aromas of different cannabis strains. Because terpenes contribute to the potency and sensory perception of cannabis, a reliable and efficient analytical method for analysis is important.

Cannabis terpenes are typically divided into two chemical classifications, monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, the former being more volatile. As terpenes are volatile, they are well suited for analysis using gas chromatography.
